Author's POV
'How could I possibly love someone like you?'
These words are roaming in her mind.
She walked out of the room with a broken demeanor.
Stared at the door for a few moments before turning around.
Heading down the stairs.
In the Hall
"What happened, beta? Why are you in tears?" her mother-in-law asked her daughter-in-law.
"And what's that shouting noise coming from your room?Did he yell at you? Just tell me, and I won't let him get away with it," her father-in-law inquired.
"No, b...baba, he didn't shout at all. Instead, he said things that indicate he...he doesn’t remember anything," she replied, struggling with her feelings.
"Yes, the doctor mentioned that it’s possible he might lose his memories, but is that true?" Aviraj (the father-in-law) asked cautiously.
"Yes," she whispered again,
"he...he doesn't recall our...our time together.
He doesn't remember that I love him.
He doesn't remember falling in love with me.
He...he doesn't remember proposing to me. He doesn’t recall that we are married.
He doesn’t remember what we were last year or what we became.
He doesn’t remember u...us.
He doesn’t remember hi...his Vani.
He only remembers Shravani."
Emotions overwhelmed her as she repeatedly recalled their past, her mind swirling with the recent painful conversation they had.
"Beta, please don’t cry. The doctor said he will slowly remember everything,"her mother-in-law said.
"I know, Maa, but what can I do? I...I don’t understand anything," she murmured, choking back her tears. "I realize there are chances, but chances alone aren’t enough to strengthen your determination. You need hope, and from where I stand, I don't see any hope right now."
"Beta, please don't cry; he will gradually remember everything, the doctor mentioned."
"I understand, Maa, but what am I supposed to do? I don’t comprehend anything," she spoke, her voice tight with emotion."I realize there are possibilities, but possibilities alone won't fuel your determination; you need hope, and from my perspective, I don't see any hope at the moment."
"What do you mean? How can you say that? I believe my daughter will not be weak to the face of life's challenges,"Aviraj replied, trying to uplift her spirits.
"But how?"She asked, her eyebrows knitted together in confusion.
"Just like before," Mahima (mother-in-law) said playfully."You know exactly what to do, and if you ever encounter any trouble, we will always be here for you, do you understand?" she said with warmth.
"Thank you,"Shravani expressed, feeling the encouragement.
"No need to thank us, beta; we recognize your strength and in your husband's words, your arrogance." Everyone laughed
"Now go to sleep it's very late" Mahima lovingly said caressed her cheeks.
"Good night ma, good night baba"Shravani replied warmly.
"Good night, beta" They replied
Everyone went to their respective rooms. Shravani entered her room Where she found her husband fast asleep.
Gently, she approached him settled down on the floor next to the bed her hand on his forehead.
"You know, Ansh, you are the first person to help me see my flaws... you're the first one who cares about who I am, not where I come from, just like Ira... As wealthy as I may be, you were the only one to hold up a true reflection in a world that often reflects our imperfections to keep us happy, but then you came along and everything shifted (smile)... I recognize that I've made mistakes, but I also understand that you love me for who I am, not for any ideal version, and I will cherish you whether you remember or not... (taking deep breath) if not, we will recreate every moment we've shared; until then, please support your Vani quietly from within your heart. I love you, Ansh.Good night."
She kissed his forehead and then went to sleep.
Next morning
At the Dining Table
Hridyansh was making his way downstairs.
“Good morning, Dad. Good morning, Mom,” he greeted them.
“Good morning, beta,” they responded.
“What’s for breakfast? Please serve it quickly; I have to head to the office after a year, and I’m not sure how it’s going to be,” he said, sounding anxious.
“For your information, this company carries on our family’s legacy, so you’re not the only one who knows how to manage a business,” Aviraj said firmly, giving Hridyansh a stern look, with side eyes.
“Yes, Dad, I was just kidding,”he replied with a nervous smile.
“And bhai, don’t worry; with bhabhi around, you’ll be just fine,”Ira (sister) chirped cheerfully.
“What?Whose bhabhi?" He asked nonchalantly.
"My bhabhi or whose" Ira rolled her eyes
"What?Ohh, so finally Veer got married" he responded calmly
"what Veer bhai also got married, and mom dad that you did not invite your one and only daughter" Ira exclaimed shockingly
Veer walked into the dining hall, bewildered,"Whose wedding are you talking about? I’m not married, I’m a bachelor!"
To which Hridyansh, looking confused, queried, "Huh? So who's this bhabhi you're mentioning?"
Ira clarified, "Your wife, my bhabhi," prompting Hridyansh to realize,
"Oh right, my wife, your bhabhi. Wait, what? Are you serious this morning? I have no interest in your jokes—next time, pick someone else for your pointless pranks." He always saw them as a waste of time.
"Bhai, we're not joking! If you don’t believe us, just ask Ma and Pa." "Yes, ask them," responded Ira.
“Is it true, ma?” he inquired, seeking his mother’s reassurance.
“Oh, yes...” as Aviraj about to say something, Mahima hesitated, then shot a fierce look at everyone and declared,
“No, beta, why are you listening to these fools?”
“I knew it! Please, no more pointless pranks, or I swear…” Hridyansh warned seriously, prompting them both to nod in agreement.
"Ok bhai don't get angry"
“Alright then, I’m off to the office. Take care, everyone,” He said, rising from his seat to receive his parents' blessings before making his way to the door.
"Why didn’t you tell him?" Ira asked, confused.
"Because Shravani refused," Mahima replied thoughtfully.
"Why?" Ira pressed further.
"I have no clue," Mahima shrugged.
After breakfast
"But why would Shravani refuse to tell the truth?" Ira asked irritably.
"Because he can’t recall the past year, the events of our wedding, or the happy memories we shared; he only remembers me as an arrogant person," Shravani explained as she entered the hall.
